The Standing series, comprised of six figures, spanning a five year period, delved into the notion of in-between states emotionally and physically. The naked figures seem to be in a state of fright, agitation or expectancy – on the verge of a breakthrough or breakdown. “One Step Forward” reflects the fierce determination involved in taking a step into unchartered territory. The other sculptures evoke both internal and external states—from waiting expectantly for something to happen as is the case with “Standing-by”, to reflecting on former versions of oneself in “I’m Still Here”.
While originating from personal stories, the Ancestors sculptures are meant to serve as archetypes, not portraits of specific individuals. The larger concepts concern the legacy of particular actions on future generations, alongside the nature of DNA and psychological inheritance.
