In the Things Change series, I examined the idea of finding oneself in a situation different than what was expected, such as a changed relationship or a new artistic direction or the unfairness of the body’s decline. What Happened?, the first sculpture in Things Change, is a partially alive sunflower with human qualities alluding to a more promising earlier state. The second piece, You’re Safe, addresses being tangled-up externally but secure inside and takes the shape of a banyan tree about to spring to life, with a small animal figure safely nestled inside its trunk. All sculptures in the series share anthropomorphic qualities and use organic forms to unmask human qualities.
