Almost and Disappointed, plaster casts, pigment and oil, Pen+Brush Gallery, NYC, 2021
The Things Change series examined the idea of finding oneself in a situation different than what was expected, such as a changed relationship, or a new artistic direction, or the unfairness of the body’s decline. All sculptures in the series share anthropomorphic qualities and use organic forms to unmask human qualities.
What Happened?, the first sculpture in the series, is a partially alive sunflower with human qualities alluding to a more promising earlier state. Almost exists in the space between a sunflower and a human form. Disappointed, part of the sunflower trilogy, exudes the emotional state of let down and possibly grief.
You’re Safe, manifests the condition of being tangled-up externally but secure inside. The painted plaster cast sculpture takes the shape of a banyan tree wiggling with life, and housing a small animal figure safely inside its trunk.
Ideas, a bas-relief, is a reflection on the creative and cognitive process of thoughts hatching in the larger world — a process integral to all of us.
